外交上の談判。「樽俎」は酒だると肉を載せる台。「折衝」は敵の衝車（攻撃用の車）を折（くじ）くこと。 もと、酒や料理が並ぶ宴会の席で、なごやかに談笑しながら、相手の攻勢をへし折って自国に有利な交渉をすすめるという意味。
